For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13).
In the middle of this famous chapter on spiritual gifts, Paul makes it clear that partaking of the Spirit of God is something that every Christian experiences. The physical baptism we experience in the church is a symbol of the spiritual baptism of every believer by the Spirit!
Every believer in Christ is already saturated by the Spirit of God.
We are drawn from different ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic classes; and we all certainly do have diverse spiritual gifts, as Paul points out in this very chapter. But the one thing we all have in common is that we were all baptized by the Holy Spirit, we all drank of the Spirit when we were brought to faith in Jesus Christ!
Contrary to a common teaching today, there is no “second blessing” in the Christian experience, in which we receive an extra measure of the Spirit. This is because every believer in Christ is already saturated by the Spirit when they are baptized by the Spirit, is already filled with the Spirit when they are made to drink of the Spirit.
No one can take this Spirit away from you, and no one needs any more than Jesus has already given.
Christian, you will never experience more of the Spirit than you have experienced through faith in Jesus Christ! You will never be given more of the Spirit than you have been given by the grace of God in salvation, because you are already immersed in the Spirit, your are already filled with the Spirit.
Yes, we must all still labor to grow in grace, and we should all pray to be “filled with the fullness of God”. But every person who has been brought to faith in Jesus Christ has been given the Spirit of God as the guarantee of their heavenly inheritance (Ephesians 1:13-14). No one can take this Spirit away you, and no one needs any more than Jesus has already given.
